Become part of the Institute for Commercial Forest Research (ICFR) & Forest Engineering
Southern Africa (FESA), based in Pietermaritzburg

FESA seeks to employ a highly motivated person, keen on working independently and with the passion to develop and drive Forest Engineering Research and Development for the benefit of the Southern African Forest Industry. This is a one year contract position with the opportunity for extension. Reporting to the Chairman of FESA Steering Committee, the successful incumbent will primarily co-ordinate and further develop FESA's research and development programme.

Key responsibilities:

  • Co-ordinate and further develop the Forest Engineering programme of FESA
  • Execute Forest Engineering research and development projects
  • Co-ordinate, manage, monitor and support research and development projects executed by service providers
  • Facilitate the interaction, knowledge exchange and development between FESA's members, forest contractors, equipment suppliers and other national forest industry stakeholders
  • Write and publish research and development reports and technical notes
  • Apply for research and development project funding at a national and international level
  • Build on existing international co-operations in forest engineering research and development
  • Drive and facilitate harvesting, transport and ergonomic operations research and development with national and international stakeholders
  • Provide administrative support for FESA

Minimum requirements:

  • BSc degree in Forestry with a specialisation in Forest Engineering
  • MSc or MTech in Forest Science or Forest Engineering would be preferable
  • Two years operational or research and development experience in Forest Engineering
  • Valid unendorsed driver's license

Essential skills and attributes:

  • Self motivated with a bias for action
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • High level of computer literacy (MS Office, MS Outlook etc.)
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to interact with management, contractors, technologists and academia at all levels
