Higher Certificate in Veldfire Management

Please find below information about the Higher certificate in Veldfire Management offered by the NMMU Faculty of Science.

Veldfire Management is unavoidably part of the live of all natural resource managers (Farmers, Conservationists, Foresters, etc.). Unfortunately the effect of veldfires are hugely underestimated and annually the economy of South Africa suffers millions of rants because of destructive veldfires.

Legislation, a changing environment, socio-political situation and general pressure on fire managers to curb the growing fire problem in South Africa, make attendance of this course a necessity.

This programme was specially developed "by the industry for the industry" to address the void in tertiary education for people responsible for managing veld and forest  fires.  For the first time fire managers are able to obtain a tertiary qualification that will prepare them for the mammoth task they have to perform. In a dynamic environment where experience alone is not enough to address the veldfire challenge faced by fire managers, they are often criticised for their "lack of understanding" of the science of veldfires. This programme is a custom made qualification to bring theory and practice together.

The programme is unique in the sense that it was designed to accommodate working individuals who want to take part but cannot afford the time to study fulltime. The course are presented part time that only require students to be away for a maximum of two weeks at a time.

The first group intake of this programme took place in 2014 and early indications are that the students are very satisfied with the course. In April 2016 the first 25 qualified veldfire managers graduated and were awarded the Higher Certificate in Veldfire Management by the NMMU Faculty of Science.

A maximum of 50 students will be allowed to register per intake group (Part-time working students as well as fulltime students).

As this programme only takes a year to complete, it is the ideal "gap" study year and it will add a lot of credibility to your cv. Natural resource managers will benefit greatly if they can add this qualification to their Diploma when applying for a job. In addition this programme will prepare you and might help you to qualify for programmes with a higher APS entry requirement.

Interested parties can apply online for free @

An APS score of 28 is required to qualify for this programme and students with a score between 22 and 28 will be considered after an admission test.
