NMMU George students to host international Forestry symposium

NMMU students in Forestry are again taking the lead in presenting an international symposium at the George Campus during the winter recess. Between 40 and 50 delegates are expected to attend this niche event aimed at the forest industry. Members of the student-driven Saasveld Forestry Association (SFA), who also serve on the International Forestry Student Association (IFSA), together with their international counterparts, have put together an interesting programme for the 2nd Southern African Regional Meeting (SARM) of IFSA. read more

Green Landscape Symposium

Green Landscapes, a project of Stellenbosch University, funded by DST/NRF's Global Change Sustainability and Society programme aims at providing land managers and regional planners with a decision support system for optimising ecosystem services‐based land‐use portfolios. Such a system can only be successful if scientists and practitioners can work together in capturing the social, environmental and economic complexities of land use and land use changes. read more

FABI Director elected as next IUFRO President

Prof Mike Wingfield, Director of FABI and the TPCP, has this week been elected as the new president of IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations). This happened during the Third IUFRO Latin American Congress, currently happening in San Jose, Costa Rica. IUFRO represents more than 15 000 forestry scientists from more than 110 countries globally, and is one of the largest scientific organizations in existence. Request for DoL / Employment conditions commission to undertake study info forestry wages

Please find attached a letter written by FSA's Executive Director, Michael Peter, to the Director General of DoL in which a request is made for either the Department or, alternatively, the Employment Conditions Commission to undertake a study of forestry wages similar to that undertaken by BFAP on agricultural wages and upon which a decision was taken on the minimum wage in that sector.

FSC Chain of custody course announcement

AB Training is planning to hold an FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) course aimed at existing and prospective FSC CoC certificate holders  (chip/board plants/pulp and paper/sawmilling/agents/retailers/printing and publishing).
The course will be presented by Prof. Michal Brink, who has 11 years of FSC auditing and training experience on over 40 countries in the world.  His organisation has trained over 500 FSC auditors globally over the last 7 years.
