FABI request for information on location of sites infested with white grubs

We are requesting information on sites infested with white grubs. If you know of sites where you have noticed whitegrubs, or which have a history of whitegrub attack on newly planted trees, please let us know. This can be sites planted with wattle, eucalypts or pine. We wish to collect these whitegrubs as part of a new PhD project that is investigating the use of EPNs (entomopathogenic nematodes) for the management of whitegrubs in plantation forestry.

Sawlog prices in North and Central Europe have trended downward the past two years, while prices in Eastern Europe have increased slightly

Sawlog prices in Europe were generally lower in 2012 than in 2011 because of lower log demand from the sawmilling sector, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. Many sawmills on the continent have been forced to reduce production as a result of the weak lumber market. Log prices fell the most in the Nordic countries, while prices in Eastern Europe were steady or even slightly higher toward the end of 2012. read more
Update on releases of Selitrichodes neseri, biocontrol agent for Leptocybe invasa

Releases of Selitrichodes neseri in Eucalyptus plantations in South Africa continue, with over 4 000 female wasps released at over 200 sites to date. These releases have focused on the regions with the highest infestation of Leptocybe invasa, namely Zululand, the Lowveld and Tzaneen, although releases have also been done in other areas such as KZN Midlands and Piet Retief-Paulpietersburg. read more
Wood fiber costs for pulp mills fell in both North America and Latin America in the 4Q/12 because of weaker pulp markets and an increased supply of sawmill chips

Lower pulp prices during last summer and an increased supply of sawmill chips put downward pressure on pulpwood prices in North America and Latin America in the 4Q/12, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly. The biggest declines occurred in Western US, British Columbia and Brazil. read more
