6th Forest Science Symposium

Planning for the 6th Forest Science Symposium is well in hand.

6th Forest Science Symposium

The theme for this year's Symposium is "Research to support a transformed, sustainable and competitive Southern African forest sector".

As has been announced, we have confirmed three international plenary speakers and are pleased to announce that Prof Bill Dvorak (Camcore), Prof Brian Via (Auburn University) and Mr Evan Shield (Consultant and recipient of the 2014 Merensky Foundation Fellowship) will all give keynote addresses at the Symposium.

Following the call for abstracts, we received more than twice the number of submissions that the 2-day programme could accommodate, and the Science Committee had a challenging time selecting from the excellent and highly relevant papers sent in.

Attached is our Draft Programme which comprises two full days of papers plus a dedicated poster session. Areas of research covered range from biotechnology and genetics, through to risk management, water use, plant propagation, silviculture, growth and yield prediction and modelling, and include aspects of urban and social forestry.

This year, we are also partnering with the journal Southern Forests, and there will be a dedicated issue of the journal produced comprising a selection of papers from the event.

Once again, we are proud to be co-hosting the event with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), which has again afforded us an opportunity to aim for a more regional focus, and we are extending an invitation to those working at forest research organisations and relevant academic institutions north of South Africa, reaching into southern and south-eastern countries.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from a number of organisations including DAFF, Sappi, Mondi, Merensky and TWK Agriculture, we are able to provide a high quality event at a relatively low cost. Companies wishing to contribute as sponsors can contact the Symposium Organiser.

Most important to note is the registration deadline of 30 June 2014.

Please diarise and book your place at this very important event on our forestry calendar, by completing the attached Registration From and returning it to us with proof of payment.
